Brain-Heart Coherence

"So, make time for your heart. Give it your energy. Give it your attention. Nurture it. Be kind to it. Care for it. Listen to it. Be present with it. Relax into it. Stay connected to it. Be patient with it. And fall in love with it." - Dr. Joe Dispenza

Blog Post #2 – Brain-Heart Coherence

I decided I wanted this post to be about something I LOVE to learn about and practice. Brain-Heart Coherence!

I spend a lot of my time reading and listening to materials learning more about this state of being and how to access it, and there is much more that I can continue to learn. So today I’m just going to share some snapshots of what I’ve gathered so far.

So! What is Brain-Heart Coherence?

Simply put, it is a state of relaxation where the heart and brain begin to communicate in a very organized, coherent way. In this relaxed state, the heart begins producing very low frequencies and through the cultivation of elevated emotions such as love, gratitude, and abundance, the heart actually begins to receive more energy. (1)

Below there is a graphic from the HeartMath Institute showing the difference in frequency between a positive and a negative emotion. As shown, negative emotions create irregular, jagged signals (like pressing the gas and brake pedals at the same time) and positive, elevated emotions create beautiful, highly ordered, harmonious waves.

The thoughts from the brain are the electric signature and the feelings from the heart are the magnetic signature. When you put those two together, you create the electromagnetic field that surrounds the human body. So when the heart is receiving more energy, that electromagnetic field around the body is expanding, becoming an even more powerful force to draw things toward it.

With a background in deaf education/audiology and the study of sound waves, my nerd self loves to show up and geek out over the energy waves emitted from the heart. The heart becomes incoherent when it is under stress. Waves work in such a way that if there is interference, they cancel each other out. But if the waves are coherent, they build upon each other, and BIGGER waves are the result. “It stands to reason, then – the more the energy in the heart, the more love we feel. This is how we not only create, but sustain, heart coherence.” (2)

Brain-Heart or Heart-Brain coherence (or more recently just Heart Coherence) is a state of creation! Dr. Joe says it this way, “As a result, the heart informs the brain that it’s safe to create, it’s safe to awaken, and it’s safe to raise its consciousness out of survival. When that happens, we can see new possibilities because we are no longer trapped in limited survival emotions.” (1) What can we create from this space? I feel inspired every time I ponder questions like: How will my relationships grow or my perspectives upgrade if I spend more time in LOVE and GRATITUDE? What new occupational opportunities will find me? I get excited to see what synchronicities will occur in my life and relationships.

TANGENT - The POWER of the heart!

I have to take a tangent here for just a moment to highlight the brilliance and depth of the heart. Question: Which sends more signals? The brain to the heart? Or the heart to the brain? If you guessed the heart to the brain, DING, DING, DING! "The heart produces the strongest magnetic field in the body - five thousand times greater in strength than the field produced by the brain." (Dr. Joe Dispenza) When we can enter this state of coherence, we are able to tune into the immense power and wisdom of the heart. Rollin McCraty, psychophysiologist, executive vice president and director of research at HeartMath Institute said, "When we get our systems coherent, and we have that alignment between heart and brain, that's when we access that deeper intuition that we have within."

If you're a scripture-reading person, you might find this as interesting as I did! The word "mind" is in scripture 396 times. The word "heart" is used 1294 times! To me, it seems like God puts a lot of emphasis on what is held in our hearts! Furthermore, along with this study, I gained greater insight into the phrase "thoughts and intents of the heart" which can be found in the following scriptures - Hebrews 4:12 and Alma 18:32. I have loved pondering how hearts have "thoughts", something that we normally associate with the brain.

This right here is one of the biggest factors that motivates me to learn how to tap into and sustain Brain-Heart Coherence! I want access to the wisdom of my heart, which I believe is the seat of my spirit and the Spirit of God.

How do we access this desirable state of creation and limitlessness?

It is through the art of connecting to the present moment. “This type of coherent energy that the heart and the brain produce raises our consciousness and moves us closer to the present moment.” (1)

When we are more conscious of our unconscious states of being, we are more present, aware agents in our lives. This is where creation comes in – when we can begin to tune into and match our frequencies to new possibilities and opportunities previously hidden from our consciousness. I have to remind myself all the time that this takes practice and patience. But, from my experience, it's always worth it!
